The Arnolfini Portrait is a 1434 oil painting which was painted by the Early Netherlandish painter Jan Van Eyck on an oak panel. It is likely that the Italian painter Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife are depicted in their residence in the Flemish city of Bruges.

It is regarded as one of the most important and complex pointing of Western art due to its beauty, complex Iconography and Geometric orthogonal perspectives and expansion of the picture space with the use of a mirror.

According to Ernst Gombrich “in its own way it was a new revolution just like the work of Donatello or masaccio in Italy. It was as if the ordinary matter of the real world had been stacked on a panel by magic”.

Erwin Panofsky and some other art historians consider this portrait to be a unique painting of the marriage contract. The most famous panel painting was oil painted. Which was purchased in 1842 by the National Gallery of London
